Sleep

You know, sleep and dreams are funny things. I mean one minute you’re dreaming of riding a horse. You feel a small urge to go to the bathroom. So you dismount. The next minute you’ve banged your head on something, your butt hurts, and you’re sitting on the bedroom floor wondering what the ____ ____ __ _ ___ __ just happened! Well … actually I was more just thinking, “ouch!” The wondering didn’t really come until a good twenty seconds after that. And the worst part is because I was sleeping, I had absolutely no recollection of the event! I just woke up on the floor!

Yeah.

Isn’t sleep wonderful? Aren’t sleep disorders even better?

Of course it could be worse. I haven’t had anything like that happen in years. Where as some people sleepwalk (and worse) all the time. Life can be dangerous for people who’s brains forget to shut down their muscles. Yet at the same time it’s quite amazing how doing things in a sleeping state doesn’t hurt nearly as much as doing them while awake.

And I suppose the opposite is equally true, that life can be just as dangerous for people who’s brains are a tad bit overzealous about shutting down the body. One minute you’re, oh, driving, and the next minute … zonk! Yikes!

The human body is an imperfect machine. Yet that’s kind of what I like about it. It keeps us on our toes, so to speak. And our whole process of sleep is just yet another of the many sources of comedy.

Still … you’d think by now science and technology would have a bit of a better handle on this…
